10 Best Exercise ideas for your Pup

We all know that exercise, along with a proper diet and a regular sleep schedule, is fundamental to a healthy lifestyle. Not surprisingly, this fact also rings true for your pup. Be he big or small, every dog can benefit from a regular exercise routine. Keeping in mind that dogs have different fitness needs based on their age and breed, almost any pet parent can benefit from the following exercise tips:

  1. Dog Walks: Simply increase your dog’s walk time, giving him plenty of time to sniff and explore, which promotes his physical and mental health.
  2. Hike: An extension of walking, hiking with your dog gives you both a chance to explore new areas helping you to bond over your exciting new adventures.
  3. Run:  If you are a runner acclimate your larger breed to this exercise gradually, building up his endurance.  Not all breeds are suited to running as some are too small or tend to overheat, so ask your vet before beginning a running program with your dog.
  4. Swim: There is nothing like a refreshing dip in warm weather.  Start your dog off slowly until he feels confident in the water and always monitor him closely.
  5. Play a game:  Frisbee, Fetch, tug-of-war toys, and hide-and-seek are all great games to get your dog moving and to promote his mental health as well.
  6. Teach your dog new tricks:  Like playing games, command training outdoors will keep your dog mentally and physically stimulated as he has fun moving and thinking.
  7. Scent Training: Nose sniffing games are very stimulating for dogs and will keep them moving and engaged.  In the beginning, hide treats in easy to find places until he gets used to sniffing out the hiding places.  Ask your trainer for tips on how to begin this type of training with your dog.
  8. Chase Bubbles:  A fun and entertaining game for pup and master is bubble chasing.  Blow bubbles and encourage your dog to chase them (you can show him how in the beginning).  You can let your pup chase you and your bubbles around your entire garden for laughs as well as for exercise. Make sure to use kid-friendly bubble solution or better yet make your own pet-friendly bubbles: https://www.rufflesnuffle.co.uk/are-bubbles-safe-for-dogs-to-play-with/
  9. Arrange a playdate with a friendly dog: Let your dog interact with another friendly pup, and he will exercise naturally as he runs and frolics with his friend.
  10. Take him to a dog park agility course.  As a special treat, take your dog to a park or facility with an obstacle course to provide him with a unique exercise challenge.

Consistent exercise for dogs helps to prevent obesity, maintain bone- and joint-health and promote mental stimulation. Even elderly or arthritic dogs will benefit from modified exercise programs.  A dog that has a regular exercise routine will be happier, better behaved and less likely to give into destructive impulses, so make sure to include routine exercise in your pup’s schedule, chances are you both will benefit.
